James Haskell: my last picnic had 1,800 calories

James Haskell loves a picnic – but not just a few nibbles and a flask of tea. The England flanker’s picnics take a bit of finishing.

“I worked it out, our picnic the other day probably had 1,800 calories in and had 50g of fat,” he said in an exclusive video for Rugby Lives.

And the Wasps’ flanker explained exactly what goes into making up a perfect picnic.

“You need to fill up the basket. You’ve got to have the crudites,” he insisted, “the carrot sticks and hummus, cocktail sausages, a couple of pork pies, some roast chicken…”

And don’t forget some sugar.

“…white chocolate milkshake, probably a couple of custard tarts.

“I’m a big fan of stopping and having a car picnic,” he added.

Haskell confessed that picnics are only such a blow-out when he does the shopping and that when his girlfriend, presenter, model and fitness expert Chloe Madeley, is in charge, things are very different.

“When Chloe gets one it’s a lot healthier,” he said.

But at least he knows what to blame for the high numbers in his choice.

“The pork pies are the killer. Who knew? Who knew?”
