England rugby star James Haskell has revealed the worst thing he ever swallowed – cod sperm.
“The most disgusting dish I ever ate was a bowl of semen, which may or may not have belonged to a fish,” recalled Haskell.
The odd meal is called shirako and is a winter dish from Japan, which can be served both cooked or raw. Even in Japan it is considered a niche speciality.
When Haskell first caught sight of the delicacy, he was unsure of its origin – and whether it even came from a fish.
The Wasps flanker tucked into the dish while he was playing rugby in Japan, he divulged in an exclusive video for FUEL.
“Definitely the worst dish I’ve ever tasted is cod sperm in Japan. Like actual fish sperm,” Haskell said, emphasising the point.
When asked what the cod sperm looked like, he replied: “As you would imagine. A bowl of semen, which may or may not have belonged to a fish.”
The 31-year-old spent four months in Japan during the 2011-2012 season.
Haskell made 11 appearances for the Ricoh Black Rams in Tokyo following England’s controversial and disappointing 2011 World Cup campaign in New Zealand.
After the Rams, he played Super Rugby for the Highlanders in New Zealand before returning to England.
