Clichy: why Will Smith’s musical pal is such a legend

Manchester City defender Gael Clichy has revealed the surprising musical hero who inspires his own DJing – DJ Jazzy Jeff.
Jeff is best known as the sidekick to Will Smith during his musical days when he rapped under the name Fresh Prince thanks to his stint on The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air.
Together, the pair had several timeless pop hits including Summertime and Boom! Shake The Room before splitting in 1994.
In an exclusive video interview with Dressing Room DJ, Clichy said: “The big DJ who I like the mixes of is DJ Jazzy Jeff. I can listen to them for two hours in a row. He’s amazing because he can mix any kind of music.”
Clichy added that he sees the veteran as an inspiration, saying: “He’s probably the one who’s given me the most good feelings when I listen. I hope one day I can be like him. He’s been making music for more than 35 years, so I’ve got time.”
In recent years, Clichy has won growing acclaim for his own DJ skills among team-mates. He is such a dedicated decksmith that he takes his turntables onto the Manchester City team coach for away games so that he can hone his DJ technique.
The French international, who is City’s pre-match dressing room DJ, revealed how it was seeing a friend DJ that inspired him to take up turntablism.
“He managed to create a vibe, and everyone in the room seemed to love that vibe,” said Clichy. “I said to myself: ‘Wow, what a talent.’ It’s a quality I’d like to have because, while it’s nice to listen to music, it’s even better if you can create something.”
