Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have had many compliments in their time, but here’s new praise for the superstars: Gael Clichy reckons they’re the football equivalent of Michael Jackson.
The players, who have won every FIFA Ballon D’or award between them since 2008, are worthy of being compared to the King Of Pop because you have to admire them – even if you don’t like their personalities.
In an exclusive interview with DRDJ, Clichy said: “Michael Jackson is probably the Messi or Ronaldo of music. Even if you don’t like the guy, you have to like the music.”
When Jackson died of a heart attack in 2009, Clichy was a bedrock in the Arsenal defence, two years away from joining City for £7 million.
The left-back believes Jackson’s music is timeless, so that even his young daughter likes his classic pop despite not knowing his name. Clichy told us: “My daughter is four, and she knows about him, but she hasn’t really heard of him.”
He continued: “If you like hip-hop, if you like R&B, if you like house, Latino, deep house, reggae… any kind of music, you have to know him and you have to like his music. He changed the world of music. He’s the number one.”
Messi and Ronaldo are a pair of thrillers too.
